Introducing a new era for appearance quality evaluation
Manchester, England (March 2010) – Elcometer are pleased to announce the launch of the new Elcometer 6015 DOI Haze Meter, a user-friendly gauge for evaluating a coating’s appearance quality. Do these three coated panels look the same?
When measured with a standard glossmeter they do – despite the difference in appearance and quality of the reflected image.
Surface distortions such as rippling, roughness, ‘orange peel’, polishing and machining marks reduce overall appearance and quality and cause reflected light to be scattered. This “scattering” is not detected by standard glossmeters as they only measure the amount of reflected light and not how light is distributed. Images reflected in the surface of a coating can appear to be either sharp or distorted. Distinctiveness Of Image (DOI) is a measure of this distortion. The DOI scale extends from 0 – no image visible to 100 – perfect undistorted reflection ie. mirror image.
By measuring the same three panels with an Elcometer 6015 DOI Haze Meter, the DOI readings increase as the clarity of the reflected image improves (Panel 1: 44.4 DOI; Panel 2: 89.1 DOI; Panel 3: 99.5 DOI), clearly indicating the difference in appearance of each panel.
The Elcometer 6015 DOI Haze Meter is no more expensive that some traditional glossmeters and with a single button press, measures not only DOI but also Gloss, Haze and Peak Specular Reflectance (RSPEC) – an indication of the peak gloss value at which a surface reflects beams of light. Using this information, it produces a graphical representation of how light is distributed across the surface thus helping to explain why samples with almost identical gloss values are very visually different – providing a surface’s visual “fingerprint”.
