Elcometer 99 Cross Hatch Coating Adhesion Test Tape

The Elcometer 99 Adhesion Test Tape, also known as ASTM Tape, is used in conjunction with both the Elcometer 107 Cross Hatch Cutter and the Elcometer 1542 Cross Hatch Adhesion Tester as a way of instantly assessing the quality between the bond and substrate, quickly, easily and efficiently.

Product Information

The Elcometer 99 Adhesion Test Tape offers users of the Permacel P99 ASTM tape which was discontinued in 2009, a close equivalent when used in accordance with ASTM D3359 – the cross cut adhesion test method for measuring adhesion using the tape test.

Under independent testing completed in 2010, using samples of Permacel P99 adhesion tape (both within and outside of the tape’s expiry date) and another two possible alternate ASTM tapes proposed by the ASTM D01.23 Sub-Committee responsible for the D3359 Standard test method, the Elcometer 99 Adhesion Test Tape, unlike the others tested, has been proven to be a very close equivalent to the Permacel P99 tape.

How to complete an adhesion test using the Elcometer 99 adhesion tape with the Elcometer 107 Cross Hatch Cutter or
Elcometer 1542 Cross Hatch Adhesion Tester

    • Place the cutting edge on the cross hatch adhesion tester on the desired surface
    • Press down gently onto the area, pulling the adhesion tester towards you in one fluid movement to make a series of steady, parallel cuts along the area approximately 20cm long
    • Place the cross hatch adhesion tester at a 90 degree angle to the first cut and repeat step 2, creating a lattice pattern onto the surface coating
    • Brush the area lightly along the lattice to get rid of any loose debris
    • Inspect area to see if the cuts have penetrated through the coating
  • Remove and discard 2 complete turns of the Elcometer 99 adhesive tape. Remove an additional length of tape approximately 75mm from this length
  • Place this cut piece of tape in the centre of the lattice, remembering to smooth it down with your finger and rubbing firmly with your nail to create a good adhesion application between the tape and coating
  • Within 5 minutes of applying the tape, pull it off with one smooth movement at approximately 1 second at a 60 degree angle to the surface
  • With tape, apply to a transparent film to maintain a permanent record
  • Access the coating adhesion by viewing the lattice cuts in good lighting and compare these cuts to the ISO/JIS standards table.

Effectiveness of the Elcometer 99 ASTM Adhesion Paint Test Tape

The testing was carried out using samples of Permacel P99 tape taken from a roll of tape that has a shelf life that expires in July 2010 and a roll of tape that had already expired. The two other tapes in the trial had been proposed as alternatives to the Permacel P99 tape and were the Scapa 8010-B tape and the Intertape LA-26 tape. The samples of these ASTM tapes were taken from rolls that were within their shelf life. Both of these adhesion tapes are established products for uses other than adhesion testing but were said by the suppliers to be near equivalents to the Permacel P99 tape.

The independent test results in Table 1 clearly show that on average the Elcometer 99 adhesion tape has a peel adhesion strength that is within 4% of the average peel strength of the Permacel P99 ASTM tape. The alternative ASTM tapes were 67.8% higher and 21.4% lower than the average for the Permacel P99 tape making the Elcometer 99 tape the closest match for the tapes that were tested.
